SCOTUS hands down Shelby County v. Holder ruling

Earlier this morning, the US Supreme Court handed down it’s ruling in this important case on the U.S. Voting Rights Act. There’s a lot of coverage of the decision in the media this morning, and I’ll post some of it later today. Based on my reading so far, the Court focused attention Section 4 of the VRA, arguing in a 5-4 decision that “Section 4’s formula is unconstitutional in light of current conditions.” Here’s a helpful early summary of the decision at SCOTUSblog, there you can find links to the decision for further reading.

This is an important decision, and one that will likely change the landscape of how jurisdictions proceed in the near future with changes to election procedures and practice.
